Winter Comfort

Below we will set out some information that may help you be a happier camper when you come to Beech Mountain. If you have any questions, please give us a call.

1. WEATHER - Winters in our area are much colder than in any other part of the southern United States. During ski season the usual temperature ranges are a low of zero to +10 degrees at night up to +30 to +40 in the daytime. On the other hand, we can have low temperatures of -20 and high temperatures in the 50's or 60's. DO NOT ASSUME anything about the weather here. The weather can change drastically in a matter of hours. Check the local weather report (www.averyweather.com – Beech forecast) for a pretty accurate picture, or call SKI BEECH for a snow report (800-438-2093). Bring plenty of warm clothes. Waterproof boots are much better than tennis shoes in snow and ice.

2. TRANSPORTATION - Your car will be your major form of transportation. For all practical purposes, there is little or no public transportation in the area. Ski Beech provides a free shuttle to the ski area on most days that the ski area is open. You cannot walk to the slopes from 4 Seasons. You will not need snow chains all the time, or most of the time, but when you need them, you need them. If you have some chains at home, bring them along. If not, you can get them at Fred’s Mercantile on Beech Mountain, Wal-Mart, or the Banner Elk Exxon. Four-wheel-drive is the best thing to have. Front wheel drive is better than rear wheel drive, but not much better. Check your battery - old batteries die quickly in very cold weather. Check your brake linings – worn flat-land brakes may go out quickly on our hills. Check your antifreeze - you don't want to freeze up at 20 below. THERE IS NO GASOLINE ON BEECH MOUNTAIN - only in Banner Elk. BRING EXTRA CAR KEYS - a locksmith call can be costly. If you drive a diesel engine car or truck, be sure you have fuel that will not jell at low temperatures, or put in an additive.

3. FOOD - The restaurants on Beech Mountain do not tend to stay open late. If you are going to get in after 10 or 11 at night, be sure you have some food or have eaten. Fred's has limited convenience store type food available - they close at 10:30 at night. Lowe's and Food Lion in Banner Elk are your local larger grocery stores. They close at 10 or 11 at night. NOTE - the kitchens at 4 Seasons do not have an oven, only a microwave and two-burner cooking range. We have soft drinks vending machines. Almost all food establishments sell beer and wine, some sell mixed drinks, and there is an ABC liquor store in Banner Elk. The 21 age limit is strictly enforced, and DUI is frowned on. We do not have tobacco products for sale at 4 Seasons.

4. EQUIPMENT - You can rent skis, snowboards, tubes, boots, bibs, jackets, gloves, etc. in the local area. If you are coming for only a few days, renting may be the best way to go.
